OVERVIEW

This year’s ASDW, is taking place on 1-4 October 2023 under the theme of “Sustainable Solutions for the Future: embracing resilience, adaptability, and progress in the ever-evolving Arab world”.

In recent years, the Arab world has witnessed remarkable advancements in various sectors, making it a region of great promise and potential. To further harness these opportunities and address the challenges faced by our communities, ASDW 2023 focuses on integrating multiple pillars crucial to sustainable development. The chosen pillars, namely Technology, Climate, Finance, Food Security, Conflict-Affected Regions, Business and Charity, Humanitarian Affairs, Sustainable Tourism, and Arab-Arab Entities Cooperation, have been thoughtfully selected to align with the current needs and aspirations of the Arab nations. By integrating these pillars, we aim to foster comprehensive and holistic approaches to sustainable development that not only contribute to economic growth but also promote social inclusion and environmental stewardship. With the crystallization of the principle of partnership in achieving the sustainable development goals and the presence of civil society institutions as a primary partner in this framework, the concept of flexibility has gradually ascended to the way and philosophy of work of these institutions to be leaders in the narrative of flexibility and work transferring experiences and best practices to various actors in the society. This also required achieving a flexible organizational and financing model to be a safety valve in times that impose exceptional and unprecedented pressures, and the past two years have witnessed the importance of the role of these institutions in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic at all national, regional and global levels. The session will discuss the most important experiences circulating among Arab civil society institutions in response to external and internal influences, especially the Covid-19 pandemic, in addition to the most important guiding frameworks and global standards for this vital issue. The session focuses on two types of flexibility: 1- Organizational flexibility within institutions to anticipate change and sudden turmoil, prepare for and adapt to it in order to survive and thrive. 2- Systemic flexibility, meaning the flexibility of relationships and interactions between these institutions and various development partners.
